The annoying thing about this station was that I rushed to get the train because it was supposed to be leaving in a minute but then ended up being delayed for fifteen, which if I knew I would have got out and had a look around the station for a bit. Anyway, this station is on the route through to Liverpool and it seems that some of the Liverpool trains, like the one that I was on, terminate here. It's rather fancy mind you, but then again a lot of stations in England are like that.

Manchester Oxford Road deserves an upgrade, while for many it can become an annoying stop, just two minutes after Manchester Piccadilly, it does provide good access to Oxford Road, just a couple of minute's away from St Peter's Square, where there are the Central Library and Metrolink services, and is also close to the Universities and student area of the city.
The staff do seem friendly, and while the facilities within the station are minimal (there is a tiny Costa with no seating area), it is ample, especially considering there is a large Sainsbury's Local, right outside on Whitworth Street.
The hill going up to the station is a little steep, and it does seem to be a common area for homeless people, it could be lit better in the dark for sure. The same could apply for the subway which connects the platforms.
3* - Decent station, it might not compare to Piccadilly and Victoria but it isn't too bad.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 05. 2. 2020Předchozí recenzeManchester Oxford Road Railway Station is surprisingly the second busiest train station in Manchester City centre, but for me, Victoria will always be the "Second station" of the city as all routes serving Oxford Road also serve Manchester Piccadilly. It is on multiple lines including the Liverpool - Norwich EMR service (It is quicker to get the TPExpress service from Victoria if heading into Liverpool though), the TFW services going into North Wales, Transpennine Express Services which includes the Ordsall Chord calling at the major stations of Manchester (Piccadilly, Victoria and of course Oxford Road), and many Northern Rail services which serve multiple northern destinations including Crewe, Liverpool, Southport, Alderley Edge and Blackpool.
While the station does have good access for students at either of Manchester's Universities and the southern part of the city centre, a short walk away from St Peter's Square and the Central Library, it is the only Manchester Central Station to lack Metrolink services, for that you'd have to get off at Deansgate which is a few minutes away and is on every line in the network.
The station doesn't have much inside compared to other stations within the city centre, there is a Java Coffee Bar on the walk-up to the station, and a Costa inside, you might want to call at Sainsbury's Local which is a pretty large supermarket across the way before getting on your train.
The staff in the station were probably the worst compared to Piccadilly and Victoria, they seemed to be day-dreaming and unapproachable to passengers.
The station is step-free to most platforms however they only have one wide ticket-gate for disabled and luggage which does have to be manually changed by a staff member to go each way, which could surely be a nightmare at rush hour.
It is in a good location with a satisfactory amount of services, serving the southern part of the city centre making it useful if you can't get into Piccadilly, but it just has that feeling it's been left behind considering it is a pretty old station which hasn't faced the modernisation and improvements of its counterparts so it does lack seating and even shelter at times. 2* - 48370166819. 5. 2016
I quite like this train station - it is not overly fancy, however, does the job!
On some platforms, it has a sitting areas where you can also hide from the wind.
Not many shops, but has free toilets (unlike Piccadilly). Also, i strongly recommend to buy tickets in advance, especially for trips during the rush hours, as queues can get quite big!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Henry P.Conwy, Velká Británie0194215. 2. 2019
It's not as big or fancy as the other Manchester train stations but it is smaller, quicker and easier to use.
Pull up right outside in your own car or taxi without annoying restrictions.
If your on foot you can get to the centre of Manchester in a few minutes.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sarah-Jane B.Brighton, Velká Británie2801096336017. 1. 2010
If you're catching the train to Manchester and planning to visit Deansgate, Castlefield or Manchester Locks, they are all within walking distance of Oxford Road train station.
The smallest station in the city, its an old skool station with a lovely arched roof, four wee platforms and a ticket desk. There's no mod cons, flashy shops or coffee chains, just a run down cafe and a paper stand selling broadsheets, tabloids, magazines and chocolate bars. If you need anything else, there's a Sainsburys Local two minutes away.
If you're looking to re-enact the pivotal scene from Brief Encounter, this is probably the best station to do it as it's usually quiet and peaceful compared to Piccadilly and Victoria. There's also cute pebbled steps outside where you can sit and read whilst waiting for your train or hail a taxi home.
Whilst the station offers regular services to Liverpool, Crewe and other cities across the North West - anyone thinking of travelling during rush-hour should note that a lot of the seats get taken at Piccadilly.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Briony C.Glasgow, Velká Británie150612931006721. 12. 2015
Now, this is no fancy Piccadilly Station but it's actually pretty good, and might be more convenient for your arrival into Manchester. It's small, easy to get around and basic - if you have a pre-booked seat on the train out of Manchester you might want to get on here rather than at the main station.
That being said, I don't think there's much by way of train snack shops, and when I arrived into here I had to walk over to the Co-Op to get a taxi. But it's a pretty handy station all the same.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Trev P.Chorley, Velká Británie71052921. 8. 2011
This station I really do like. It may be just a small station but there is something about it.
Have had a few fond memories of having a coffee in the cafe next to the Entrance / Exit.
And yes it's a sad life but I could easily nip there just for that coffee.
Great place for people watching too.
Always busy .
I'm sounding like a train spotter arnt I, but Stations.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kirsten P.Manchester, Velká Británie144263878. 2. 2010
A handy place to catch a train Wales-ward or up towards Bolton and Blackpool, but unfortunately the station doesn't have the old-fashioned grandeur of Victoria, nor the Burger King and M&S Simply Food of Piccadilly. It also doesn't have a Virgin Trains ticket machine meaning that you'd have to pick up your tickets from Piccadilly or risk buying them on the day, which almost guarantees you that you'll be standing up next to Scottish football hooligans and dodging the refreshments trolley for your entire journey.
This is not the most romantic of stations either, thanks to the automatic ticket barriers at the entrance. It does not allow for those lengthy goodbyes, faces squidged against the window or running alongside the train. So if you're into that kind of thing get the train from Piccadilly instead (most of the trains stop at both), where even if there are men checking your tickets, you can usually blag entry to the platforms.
However, the station is right next to some wonderful pubs, the even more wonderful Cornerhouse and is very handy for the busiest bus route in Europe if you're heading south to Fallowfield, Chorlton or Didsbury. If you have luggage and can't be bothered with the steps under the railway bridge or the hilly ascent to the station then you can always take the free Metroshuttle to and from the door.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alex B.Northern Quarter, Manchester, Velká Británie951863503. 9. 2015
This is a train station where you can walk in and not only get the train you want , but also meet friendly and helpful staff and that is sometimes a blessing !
Having been fortunate to have know some of the station staff here I can honestly say they are a credit to northern rail!
Few facts about Manchester Oxford rd station
- Busiest station run by Northen rail !
- Peak passenger flow times are 8:45 till 10 am and 16:35 - 18:00
- Travel to Liverpool , Blackpool and lots more from here
There is a Java coffee bar at the bottom of the station apron and a point shop and go for your train sweeties - but if you have a little longer there is a sainsburys just across the road from the entrance which is much cheaper
Due to this being a peak station and lots of passenger traffic going through here you will find electronic ticket barriers before you can access or leave the platforms
But it's not all rules , lines and tickets please. Somebody has had an ingenious idea to Install some pianos on the main concourse if you want to tickle the Ivory!
Enjoy your journey !Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - alexandra s.Manchester, Velká Británie73754033. 10. 2009
Okay so this station is pretty basic. It has four platforms, one cafe and one info desk but it's still a good station. The staff are friendly, the platforms are kept clean and I feel really safe when I am there.
It's a case of small but perfectly formed with this one. You will find no shortage of routes here and the trains are really regular to most northern locations. I am a big fan of places that keep it really simple but do what they do really effectively.
The location of this station is perfect for city commuters and is right next to a supermarket, lots of hotels, a cinema and the uni. Could for with a modern refurb but that's the only flaw I can find. Good job little station !Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
